Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (MBFHI)

Our History

The roots of Save the Mothers can be traced to the 1999 Safe Motherhood Conference in Sri Lanka, where members of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda (AOGU) and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) recognized the need for a new approach to addressing maternal mortality.

Among the visionaries who shaped this idea were Prof. Pius Okong, Prof. Florence Mirembe, Dr. Olive Sentumbwe, and Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese. Together, they envisioned a leadership training program that would equip professionals from multiple sectors to become champions for maternal and newborn health.

This vision became a reality in 2005 with the launch of the Master of Public Health Leadership (MPHL) program at Uganda Christian University. Since then, Save the Mothers has grown into a recognized leader in advancing multidisciplinary solutions for safe motherhood across Uganda and beyond.
